How I found resources which could help transitioning service members, veterans and military spouses

The purpose of this post is to share my recent discovery of Salesforce free online training modules, Vetforce community and mentors at Veterati.  I hope that the blog will help transitioning military members, veterans and military spouses with their career transitions.

With a background in software testing, I was searching for a career path that would make me relevant and marketable in the ever-changing technological world.  Using Google search, I found Salesforce Trailblazer Community and explored the free online training for in-demand skills. I found the learning modules to be very informative, fun, and inspirational in pursuing the career paths in the Salesforce ecosystem.

How I found Career Path, Learning Path and Trailblazer Community in Trailhead

In Salesforce Trailhead, I found a wealth of information for researching the details, rewards and requirements of many different careers in Salesforce. I found that I liked helping people with technology and therefore selected the career path in Salesforce Administrator.

For Learning Path, I found the Blaze your trail section and selected the learning path: Prepare for Your Salesforce Administrator Credential. I explored the Trailblazer Community for inspiration and attended the local User Group meetings. I am grateful for the Trailblazers in the San Francisco Bay Area User Groups. I have listed these resources in the Related Resources section.

How I found Vetforce Community

I found Vetforce Community after searching Google for “Salesforce Veterans”. As a Military Spouse, I wasn’t sure if I would qualify to join Vetforce, but I was interested nonetheless. I was able to join Vetforce and received a Welcome to Vetforce email!

Welcome to Vetforce – Setting Goal, Learning Path, Community and Awesome Resources

Following the guides on the Welcome to Vetforce email, I chose the goal, “Become Salesforce Certified Administrator”.  Once I selected the goal, my learning path and training modules were auto-populated with the trailmix: Vetforce: Salesforce Certified Administrator.

The training modules are in Salesforce Trailhead. The learning progress in Vetforce is synched with Trailhead and includes completed learning badges and Trailblazer rank. Vetforce also automatically added me to the following groups:

  1. Vetforce Central
  2. Become Salesforce Certified Administrator
  3. Mountaineer Trailblazer Rank

What I learned in Trailhead and how I found help – Mentors

As I progressed through the training modules, I found that it took focus, time, and effort to comprehend and retain the new knowledge. In Trailhead, I used the Trailblazer Community to search for clarifications and answers when I got stuck in the modules. Once I complete the module, I earn more points and badges to motivate me to go further with Trailblazer Ranks.

In Vetforce Groups and Chatter, I found inspirational and success stories when veterans and military spouses shared their progress in learning, getting certifications and finding internships and jobs.

From the Resources tab in Vetforce, I found mentors at Veterati. I reached out and signed up for free mentorship phone calls. I spoke with four mentors.  I am very grateful that each mentor gave their time and shared their professional insights to help Service Members, Veterans, and Military Spouses.

The mentors gave me motivation, encouragement, and advice on a career path. As a result, I was able to better manage my time to focus on completing the Vetforce: Salesforce Certified Administrator as soon as possible.

After I completed my online training modules in Vetforce: Salesforce Certified Administrator, Vetforce sent me an email with an option to enroll in a Salesforce Administrator class.  I selected a class in San Francisco and Vetforce approved and paid for the class. This is the best feeling to recieve help and support from the Vetforce and Salesforce!

From the Vetforce Group posting, I found a mentor who generously shared his expertise in Vetforce.  He helped me in setting the next goal in Vetforce learning, preparing for the certification exam and tips on finding an internship and job in the Salesforce ecosystem.

What’s next – Preparing for the Salesforce Administrator Certification Exam

Completing the online learning modules on Vetforce: Salesforce Certified Administrator is the first step in my Salesforce career path.  I am looking forward to attend the Salesforce Administrator class (ADX-201) and study guides for the Salesforce Administrator Certification Exam.

I have updated my Vetforce goal to, “Become a Salesforce Platform App Builder.”  I plan to complete the online learning modules and register for the class (DEX-402).  Once the class is complete, I will study for the certification exam for the Salesforce Platform App Builder.
